PORTLAND (AP) — Police say a man walking along the railroad tracks in Portland has been struck and killed by a freight train.
Lt. Bob Ridge said the man was walking south at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on a stretch between Forest Avenue and Irving Street when he was struck by a northbound train.
Police think the man saw the Pan Am Railways freight train and tried to step aside, but didn’t move far enough. He was declared dead at the scene.
The death is not believed to be a suicide.
The man’s name was not immediately made public, but police say he is in his 60s.
The death prompted Amtrak to use taxis and buses to transport Downeaster passengers around the accident scene.
