PORTLAND (AP) — Portland police released the name of the homeless man who was struck and killed by a train earlier this week.

Police on Thursday identified the man killed on Wednesday night as 54-year-old Richard Cobb.

Police have said Cobb was walking along a stretch of tracks between Forest Avenue and Irving Street when he was struck by a train coming in the other direction.

Authorities think the man saw the 84-car Pan Am Railways freight train and tried to step aside, but didn’t move over far enough. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police and Pan Am are investigating why Cobb was on the tracks, but police have said they do not believe it was suicide.
