BANGOR – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team was held to just one goal and dropped a 4-1 decision to Husson University, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
UMaine-Farmington fell to 6-5 overall with the loss, 5-2 in NAC play, and head into the final week of the regular season tied for third in the NAC standings with St. Joseph’s College – their next opponent on the schedule. Husson improved to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play, and are in sole possession of second place.
Senior Kashley Weymouth scored the Beavers’ lone goal with 2:31 left in the first half, answering two goals scored earlier in the frame by Husson.
But the Beavers would draw no closer to catching the Eagles, as Taylor Lovley scored with 23:37 remaining in the second half to extend Husson’s lead to 3-1. Liz Noddin effectively put the game beyond reach with 10:35 showing on the clock, scoring off an assist from Lovley.
Lovley and Noddin each scored once in the first half for Husson as well.
UMaine-Farmington outshot Husson, 31-16, including an 18-8 margin in shots on goal. UMF goalie Curran Brierley finished the day with four saves, while Husson’s Maicee Gustin charted 17 stops.
The Beavers had 18 penalty corner opportunities to Husson’s 12.
UMaine-Farmington faces St. Joseph’s on Wednesday.
DeBlois, USM golf finish third
CRANSTON, R.I. – Senior Aidan Boyce earned a spot on the All-Great Northeast Athletic conference team finishing in a two-way tie for second place leading the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a third place finish at the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Golf Tournament hosted by Johnson and Wales University at the Cranston Country Club this weekend.
Boyce finished just four strokes off of the individual medalist, Tim Leigh of the Rhode Island College Anchormen. Boyce carded a two-day total of 151 (71-80) to finish nine-over par on the par 71 course that measures 6,493 yards. Leigh finished with a two-day total of 147 (71-76), earning GNAC Player of the Year honors to lead the Anchormen to their third consecutive GNAC Championship. Joining Leigh and Boyce on the All-Great Northeast Athletic conference team were Johnson & Wales junior Juan Fernandez, RIC’s Jonathan Cooper and UMass Dartmouth’s Brendan Kelleher.
Huskies freshman Bradley Myers continued to turn in a strong performance over the championship, tying for fourth place with a two-day total of 152 (73-79) narrowly missing out on all-conference honors. Classmate Zach DeBlois of Auburn (St. Dom’s) cared a 159 (81-78) to tie for 16th, while rookie Tom Murray (Bangor, Maine) posted a 162 (78-84) to place in a tie for 20th. Senior A.J. Simokaitis (Falmouth, Maine) was the Huskies fifth golfer placing 37th with a two-day total of 178 (86-92).
