AUBURN — Reports on how iPads are being used in Auburn schools and how iPad tablet computers have impacted student learning will be given to the School Committee on Wednesday night.

The committee will also hear how a more student-centered approach to teaching, called “mass customized learning,” is going in classrooms, Superintendent Katy Grondin said.

The reports will be given by grades.

At a workshop that begins at 5:30 p.m., teachers and administrators will talk about what iPads are doing for elementary students, and test data intended to show the impact iPads are having on student learning, Grondin said.

Administrators will also share how mass customized learning is going in elementary classrooms.

At the committee’s regular meeting at 7 p.m., reports will be given on iPad use by middle and high school students. This year, the iPads replaced laptops at the middle and high schools.

Also, the community will hear how mass customized learning is going at the middle and high school classrooms, Grondin said.

During recent community meetings, “people are still wondering what mass customized learning is,” Grondin said.

She explained it as an individualized and “student-centered” method of teaching, rather than the teacher just giving the same lessons to all students in a classroom. Students are informed what it is they need to learn; teachers help them achieve that learning.

“All students aren’t doing the same thing at the same moment. We’re giving students voice and choice,” she said.

Technology from iPads helps support that work, Grondin said.

This year is the first year that mass customized learning techniques are being used in all elementary classrooms; it’s the second year at the high school.

Wednesday’s meeting can be viewed on Great Falls TV, or the city website, www.auburnmaine.org.

The School Committee meets in the council chamber of Auburn Hall.
