Conservation payments resume

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that USDA has begun distributing Conservation Reserve Program annual rental payments to participants across the country. USDA also will distribute 2013 direct payments and 2012 Average Crop Revenue Election program payments beginning Oct. 24.

Payments originally were scheduled to be issued earlier in the month, but were delayed by several weeks due to the lapse in federal funding.

NORWAY — The First Universalist Church of Norway will present the annual harvest dinner and concert on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 479 Main St.

A local foods supper will be served at 5 p.m. Concert is at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $10 at the door.

Cubs Who Care charity auction

NORWAY — A Cubs Who Care charity auction will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Norway Legion Hall on Main Street.

Annually for the past several years Mr. and Mrs. Claus have toured through the Oxford Hills community on a sleigh handing out toys to local children. The Chinese auction will raise money to help with this annual event. The goal is to raise enough money so that each child who attends will be able to receive a gift from Santa, if not two.

Organizers are seeking businesses that are willing to donate a service, a gift certificate or a slightly used or new item.

Oxford Hills H.S. conferences

PARIS — Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School will hold parent-teacher conferences between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6. 

All teachers and/or teams will have conferences at this time. Call Breta Howe at 743-8914, ext. 9532 or 9500, by 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, with questions or to arrange appointments.

Parents who do not call ahead for an appointment may still sign up for a time on Nov. 6 by stopping at the classroom and signing up for any open time on the appointment sheet posted outside teachers’ classrooms. Maps of the building and student schedules will be available in the Guidance Office.

Socrates Café is Nov. 4

WATERFORD — A Socrates Café gathering will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at the Waterford Library. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.

The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

The topic for the November meeting will be: “How Can We Help People Get Established In Our Community?” The moderator will be Connie Allen.
