PORTLAND — A Ugandan man who helped arrange a scam marriage in Maine so another man could become a legal permanent resident of the United States is going to jail.
A judge on Friday imposed a sentence of fourth months’ imprisonment and fourth months of home confinement for 35-year-old Ronald Serunjogi of Saco.
Serunjogi was convicted of helping another Ugandan man who had overstayed his tourist visa pay a Lewiston woman who agreed to marry the other man so he could became a lawful permanent resident. He was accused of assisting that man, Sampson Sengoonzi, in preparing documents to immigration authorities.
Immigration authorities detected the fraud, denied the application and referred the matter for a criminal investigation. Sengoonzi was previously convicted and has been ordered deported.
