CANTON — A man faces charges after a police chase through four towns with speeds at more than 100 mph Sunday.
The driver was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington due to medical issues unrelated to the chase, Maine State Police Trooper Alan Levy said Monday.
Once he is released from the hospital, he will be taken to the Franklin County jail in Farmington and charged with possession of stolen property, eluding and evading police, driving to endanger, criminal speed, operating after suspension and drug charges, Levy said.
The man is also wanted on warrants unrelated to Sunday’s incident, he said.
Police said a 2008 Ford Escape was stolen from a Old Jay Hill Road driveway in North Jay at about 5 a.m. Friday. A woman started it to warm it up and went back into the house. When she saw it being driven away, she called Jay police.
On Sunday, a person at the Big Apple in Turner recognized the stolen SUV from a Facebook post and reported it to police, Levy said Monday.
Levy said he waited near Long Green Variety on Route 4 in Livermore near the intersection of Route 108 and spotted the SUV traveling north on Route 4. It turned left into a driveway and headed south on Route 4.
Levy said he activated his lights and pulled his cruiser so that it was facing the vehicle in the breakdown lane. The driver went around him on the grass and stopped to let out two passengers before taking off toward Turner.
The chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph and covered nearly 30 miles over roads in Turner, Livermore, Jay and Canton, Levy said. The driver turned on to the dead-end Edmunds Road in Canton, stopped SUV and put his arms up, Levy said.
