DIXFIELD — The Police Department will close a section of Weld Street for the annual Halloween Walk on Thursday.
The closure will be from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m., and stretch from Main Street to Ellis’ Variety. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed to pass, police Chief Richard Pickett said Wednesday.
Around 5:15 p.m., barricades will be set up at the Weld Street intersections with Oak Lane, Mill Street, First Avenue, North Street, Highland Avenue, Park Avenue, Kidder Avenue and Ellis Street. The Public Works department is assisting.
“I believe that this will make the Halloween Walk route a much safer environment for all involved,” Pickett said.
An emergency medical station, manned by Med-Care Ambulance, will be set up at the intersection of Weld Street and Nash Street.
“The detour route will be on High Street,” the chief said. “It will follow Pine Street to Coburn Avenue. Coburn Avenue will then be opened onto Weld Street but only to the north for through traffic. Any customers of Ellis’ Variety may access the business from Coburn Avenue.”
The Halloween Walk was established to provide a a safe environment for parents and their children. Pickett said older children should wear costumes that have some light colors, carry a flashlight so traffic on the back streets can see them and always walk facing traffic.
