One of the proudest men in town is John Emerson. Why, he so “stuck-up” you can’t touch him with a ten foot pole. The reason is this. His sixteen-year-old grandson, Arthur Emerson, son of A.J. Emerson, has recently captured two fine deer. Young Emerson, who had had little experience with the gun, took it into his head that he wanted to get into the wilds for game. He set out for the Dead River region for a week’s hunting trip and was accompanied only by his guide. To say that he was happy when the first deer fell is putting it mildly. And, when a shot from his gun knocked out the second animal. Well, those who searched the woods for game know how he felt. But, say, he isn’t half so tickled as his grandfather.

The 1963 five cent Christmas stamp will go on sale at the Lewiston Post Office tomorrow, Postmaster Roger Albert said today. The stamp is in blue, green and red on white and features a Christmas tree with the White House in the background. The original printing of the stamp totals 2,000,000,000 and the Lewiston office has 150,000 of that number ready for sale. During the Christmas period last year the post office sold 407,000 third class stamps in the three-cent category and 608,100 first class stamps, including 150,000 of the first Christmas stamp ever issued which was in a four cent category. Albert said the post office is well prepared for the rush with 1,600,000 first class stamps on hand in addition to the new Christmas stamps.

By the time Thanksgiving Day is over, Tom Fortier will know as much about New York’s Herald Square as he does about Lewiston’s Hulett Square. Fortier, who plays trumpet with the Edward Little High School, will leave later this month for New York City, where he will perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as part of the 1988 McDonald’s All-American High School Band. A 17-year-old senior who took up the trumpet shortly before entering the third grade, Fortier said he was surprised when he received a Western Union telegram last month informing him that he would be filling one of two coveted Maine slots.
