Halloween is a special day for me, beyond the pumpkins and candy. My first day as a Sun Journal reporter was on Halloween 1983.

When I started, I was the mother of two boys, and soon I had a third. Now we’re empty nesters, except for our dog, Lucy, and grandparents of four boys.

A 30-year anniversary makes you pause, realizing there won’t be another 30 years, and how much a satisfying job (on most days) contributes to your life. I’ve met so many interesting and cool people I never would have if it had not been for this job. I’ve gotten to know Lewiston-Auburn well because of this job; I like the community. I’ve been on some fun assignments, getting to interview big names such as Patrick Dempsey, Ted Kennedy and Ray Bourque, when I thought, “I’m being paid for this?!”

I am grateful for the experiences. I’m not planning on retiring soon, but it’s out there.

Meanwhile, this is for all those people who flinched when I casually asked, “How old are you?”

I’m 57.
