We applaud the Sun Journal for highlighting the importance of literacy in the recent editorial, “Our literacy is society’s shared legacy” (Oct. 24).
Here at the Harward Center for Community Partnerships, the hub for community-engaged work at Bates College, we connect interested faculty, staff and hundreds of Bates students to an incredible array of highly effective, literacy-based education organizations right here in Lewiston-Auburn, including the Lewiston and Auburn public schools; the Lewiston Public Library; the Somali Bantu Youth Association of Maine; Lewiston Adult Education; Literacy Volunteers; Tree Street Youth; the Lewiston Housing Authority; Androscoggin Head Start; Advocates for Children; and many others.
While those organizations may not hold a press conference every time they launch a new initiative, they are making a significant difference in the lives of children and families in this community.
