PORTLAND — Maine is getting nearly $34 million in federal heating assistance funds.
U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud’s office says the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is making available $2.9 billion nationwide from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance program, or LIHEAP, of which Maine’s share is $33.8 million.
DHHS says it plans to release another $354 million nationally, which includes $3.8 million for Maine, once Congress passes a budget through the remainder of the current fiscal year.
If that happens, Maine will end up with $37.5 million in all for the 2013-14 heating season.
- Big G Heating Fuel’s David Gendron prepares to top of an oil tank on Fortin Street in Lewiston Friday afternoon. Gendron realizes he is a little more costly than most, be as he says, “it’s all about the service. If you catch me before 9 a.m. and your fuel tank is empty, there is no extra charge.” Gendron also buys all of his oil local, instead of traveling to New Hampshire or Massachusetts where the whole sale prices might be cheaper.
