Dr. Peter Drews, assisted by Julie Cormier, starts a root canal on Rick Aube, 64, an Army veteran, at Drews’ Sabattus Street dental practice Friday. Drews, a Navy veteran, offered free services to veterans from 8 a.m. to noon Friday. “It felt great,” Drews said. “We had patients who had tears in their eyes, because they didn’t know where to start to get back to good oral health.” On Friday, Drews donated $7,035 in dental services, including a set of dentures and cleanings for the 18 veterans scheduled. Over the next 12 months, Drews has set up five of the veterans to return to complete treatment plans and will donate another $12,285 in services. Smile Again Dentures donated dentures, if needed.
Mindy Syphers cleans Don Cunningham’s teeth for free Friday at Drews Dental on Sabattus Street in Lewiston. Cunningham, 64, of Lewiston is a 12-year veteran of the Amry and Army Reserves and hadn’t had his teeth cleaned in four years, because of a lack of insurance and the cost of services. Most employees of Drews Dental had a direct relative who had served in the armed forces, including Syphers. “This is a great service,” Cunningham said.
