BETHEL — The SAD 44 board readmitted an expelled student, hired music and physical education teachers and dealt with school maintenance issues this week.

Superintendent David Murphy said in an email that the board unanimously readmitted a high school boy following an hourlong closed session. The boy was expelled in March for an undisclosed offense.

Hired for vacant positions were Tim Megan as a 60-percent-time elementary instrumental music teacher and Scott Underhill, who was previously employed in neighboring RSU 10, as the Telstar Middle School physical education and health teacher.

Murphy said the district continues to identify equipment and other items it will retain when the former Ethel Bisbee Elementary School is returned to the town. The small school was closed many years ago, and had served as SAD 44’s central office and as a free store. It is now vacant.

Plans are to officially return the building to the town by the fall of 2014.

In other building matters, Murphy said that since the in-ground oil tank at Andover Elementary School did not pass a recent inspection, the district installed an above ground, 500-gallon tank.

The remaining oil in the in-ground tank was pumped out and distributed to other schools in the district.

In other matters, Murphy said:

* Roof work has been completed on the industrial arts wing of the Telstar Middle-High School complex.

* An additional workshop day for teachers to work on student learning objectives and professional goals as part of a major grant recently was held.

* Action on acceptance of a Crescent Park Elementary School/Telstar complex energy audit and an engineering study of the project by Honeywell was tabled for further information.

The next board meeting is 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at the high school library.
