PORTLAND — A homeless man is facing an aggravated assault charge after he allegedly attacked a pedestrian who refused to give him money Monday, police said.
Richard Sneddon, 45, is being held at the Cumberland County Jail and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday, Portland police Lt. James Sweatt said.
A man from the United Kingdom was walking on Congress Street shortly after noon Monday when Sneddon asked him for money, Sweatt said.
When the man said no, Sneddon pushed and kicked the victim as the victim tried to walk away, the lieutenant said. The victim needed emergency surgery at Maine Medical Center for a leg injury. He is expected to face a long period of recovery.
Sneddon’s bail was set at $1,000. Police located and arrested him at 6:30 p.m. in Monument Square.
