FARMINGTON (AP) — Enrollment is down 2 percent across the University of Maine System this fall when compared to last fall, and down more than 6 percent when compared to the fall of 2009.
The flagship campus in Orono — with a more than 3 percent increase in enrollment — and the Fort Kent campus are the only two with enrollment increases this fall.
The University of Southern Maine saw overall enrollment drop almost 5 percent.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1ehKs17 ) reported that the numbers — which include undergraduate and graduate enrollment — were released this week at the trustees meeting in Farmington.
The drop is due in large part to a shrinking number graduates from Maine high schools.
The university has launched efforts to bring in more out-of-state and international students.
