BURLINGTON, Vt. — Chris Muscoby tipped a shot past Maine goalie Martin Ouellette at 17:11 of the third period to lift the Vermont Catamounts past the University of Maine 3-2 in men’s ice hockey action on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The Black Bears got goals from Devin Shore and Steven Swavely.
Vermont grabbed a 1-0 lead when Michael Paliotta fired a shot past Ouellette from the top of the left face-off circle on the power play at 8:23 of the third. Chris McCarthy and Jake Fallon each assisted on the goal for the Catamounts.
Maine tied the game at 1-1 at 2:52 of the second period when Shore scored on a rebound. For Shore, it was his fifth goal of the season. Stu Higgins and Ben Hutton each assisted on the goal.
Maine took its first lead of the night at 8:52 of the second period when Steven Swavely tipped a Conor Riley shot past UVM goalie Brody Hoffman from the slot. It was the third goal of the season for Swavely. Jake Rutt also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.
Vermont tied the game at 14:43 of the second frame. Ouellette made the initial save on the shot, but was unable to control the rebound. Fallon continued to put pressure on the puck and got credit for the goal. Muscoby and McCarthy both assisted on the goal.
Vermont got the game-winner at 17:11 when Muscoby tipped a McCarthy pass past Ouellette. For Muscoby, it was his second goal of the season.
Maine finished the game with a 34-24 edge in shots on goal. The Black Bears were 1-for-3 on the power play, while Vermont finished 1-for-4.
Ouellette made 21 saves in goal for the Black Bear and falls to 6-5-1. Hoffman stopped 32 shots and improves to 2-2-0.
The two teams finish their two-game weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
