BATH — “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” written by Barbara Robinson, is the story of Imogene, Claude, Ralph, Leroy, Ollie, and Gladys, six delinquent children surnamed Herdman. They go to church for the first time after being told that the church offers snacks.
Despite protests from other church members, they are given roles in the Sunday school’s Christmas play, in which they tell the Christmas story in a nonconventional fashion. The Herdmans, terrors of the town, take over the annual Christmas pageant with surprising results, for both the town and the Herdmans.
This play involves dozens of kids in a comedic tale about how children and adults learn the meaning of Christmas with understanding and love.
Each show will feature local musicians and singers performing Christmas carols before the play. The Chocolate Church Arts Center is going through a pivotal transition from music venue to community arts center. This play represents this transition by engaging children and adults in a creative project as a gift to the community.
The Chocolate Church is at 804 Washington St. Performance dates and times are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19; Friday, Dec. 20; Saturday, Dec. 21. A matinee will be performed at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22. Tickets are $10/$7 for students/seniors at www.chocolatechurcharts.org or by calling 207-442-8455.
