NEWRY — Sunday River will open the lower two-thirds of its new T72 terrain park trail and host its “First Drop” on Saturday, Dec. 7.
“We’ve been able to make a ton more snow than expected and, as a result, will have built the longest jump line in New England along with a rail park,” Morgan Rudd, terrain park manager, said Thursday. “It’s considerable progress and will be a ton of fun to check out this weekend.”
Resort spokesperson Darcy Morse said Thursday afternoon that the 15-acre trail on North Peak, between the Dream Maker and 3D trails, has been in the works for nearly a decade.
“Actually, around 30 years ago, when Les Otten still owned Sunday River, different locations were already being identified for terrain parks,” Morse said.
Morse said Sunday River teamed up with Snow Park Technologies to help create the layout of the trail.
“Snow Park Technologies has actually created some of the trails used in the Winter X-Games,” Morse said. “It’s been great to have them available to set up the trail. Right now, people are thrilled. It’s a project that’s been in the works for a long time now. People are ready for it.”
The remainder of the terrain park will open after the 18-foot superpipe and the top section of the T72 trail are completed.
Once completed, the terrain park will feature a superpipe and jump line in the middle of the trail, and a rail park at the foot of the trail.
