Ten years ago the assessors found 8,463 hens in Lewiston. Five years later they found 13,655 and this year they report 13,783. In Auburn the assessors found 18,153 hens ten years ago, 23,875 five years ago and this year report exactly 10,000. The latter figure looks very much like a guess. It is barely possible that an extra hen, or possibly a rooster might be found up on Goff Hill so as to relieve the monotony of all those zeros.

The judges of the Auburn and Lewiston municipal courts said Saturday they do not plan to reveal the names of juvenile shoplifting offenders. The comments followed an announcement that such action would be taken in Portland Municipal Court. Auburn Municipal Court Judge L. Damon Scales said he is not planning any change at this time, but added it depends on circumstances and whether or not the court is dealing “with kids who are casual offenders or the hardened type. If the privacy element is no longer effective then that’s one matter. If I thought it would be helpful to curb a rash of incidents, I might do it.” Paul A. Cote, judge of the Lewiston Municipal Court said that releasing such information “is one of the last things I’d do” he added that “there have been certain crimes in the past where I considered lowering the ban, but I finally decided against it. Once you give juveniles publicity, it can be used against them all through their lives.”

The last lines are being painted and railings installed on the upper stories of the parking garage behind L.L. Bean’s telemarketing center on Main Street. The first floor of the garage was opened for use about two weeks ago, Platz said. Some employees at L.L Bean’s telemarketing center, which is located in the old Peck’s department store, have been parking in the lot behind the old Peck’s appliance warehouse since June. The warehouse lot has 150 parking spaces. A few others, between 30 and 40 employees, parked in the Centre-ville parking garage on Canal Street between mid-September and mid-November but are now in the parking garage or the warehouse lot.
