MEXICO — The Rumford and Mexico historical societies will be teaming up at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, in the Calvin Lyons Room of the Mexico Town Hall for a joint potluck supper.
Rumford Historical Society President Jane Peterson said that the potluck supper between the two towns is normally an annual event, but they had to cancel it last year due to a snowstorm.
“We’re bringing it back this year, and for the first time, we’re inviting members of the Byron, Dixfield and Peru historical societies as well,” Peterson said. “We all sort of know each other because of the Maine Memory Network project we’ve been doing for RSU 10.”
Peterson said that Mexico has traditionally held a Christmas party, though the Rumford Historical Society never did.
“A few years ago, they invited us to attend the potluck,” Peterson said. “Anybody who attends can bring an appetizer, a dessert or a dish. Each of the historical societies will be providing beverages and table utensils this year.”
Peterson said that in lieu of gifts each person who attends will bring a nonperishable food item to help fill a basket for the local food pantry.
The event tends to be “very well-attended,” Peterson said, adding that it will likely be beneficial to invite other historical societies to the potluck supper.
