SOUTH PORTLAND — Maine State Police are asking motorists to slow down and move over when they see an officer conducting a traffic stop on the state’s roadways, after several cruisers have been struck in the past few months.
Maine State Police Corporal Lance McClish told WCSH-TV that crashes have been caused when drivers are either going too fast or not paying attention. He said distracted drivers are one of the biggest concerns for state police.
Drivers who see an emergency or police vehicle in the breakdown are required by law to move into the passing lane. Otherwise, they face a fine of more than $300.

- Trooper William Baker was treated for a number of bumps and bruises earlier this month. Baker was sitting in his parked cruiser at the site of another crash on the Maine Turnpike when a car skidding on the icy roadway and hit his cruiser.
