1946 – 2013

MADRID — John M. Sauschuck, 67, of Madrid, passed away at his home on Monday, Dec. 16, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Port Jervis, New York on November 7, 1946, to parents Michael and Rita (MacArthur) Sauschuck.

John joined the United States Navy in 1964 and married his best friend, Sharon, in 1968. They welcomed a daughter, Tania, in 1969 and a son, Michael, in 1970.

John and Sharon moved their family to Maine in 1977 and built their own log cabin next to the Sandy River in Madrid. John even hand picked the standing trees and sawed them himself at CA&T Lumber. He spent more than 30 years working at CA&T Lumber in Strong and as the foreman at Moose Creek Log Homes in Turner.

After “retiring,” he got his Class B driver’s license and began working for Western Maine Transportation driving a shuttle bus at Sugarloaf. John was a longtime member of the Western Maine Street Rods and truly thought of this incredible group of kindred spirits as a part of his family. He was known to be quick with a gag, a laugh or a healthy debate on exactly why Chevys are a far superior product to Fords. His friends will remember him behind the wheel of his flamed-out ’55 Chevy with the license plate “LITEUMUP,” looking for an excuse to do just that.

John will be remembered as an incredible person who we are lucky to love as a husband, father, brother and friend. He was a good man and we will always love him. 

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon; his two children, Tania Dawson and husband, Brian, and Michael Sauschuck and wife, Mary; his sisters, Marie McDermott and husband, Jerry, and Michele Lopriore and husband, Gary; his nieces and nephews, Amy, Sara and JR and their families; and of course, the grand dogs.

His family would like to express a special thank-you to Beacon Hospital, in particular to Glenna, Cindy and Dr. Donahue for their personal care and attention.
