“Lewiston is like Sunny Italy,” was the statement, in speaking of this part of New England, made by Francis M. Evans of Harrogate, England, who with Mrs. Evans, is making his first visit to America, Lewiston being the first sojourn. And a happy family gathering it has been, for Mrs. Evans is seeing, for the first time, cousins whom she has known only thru correspondence. “Yes we are simply charmed with your atmosphere. It is so clear and dry and so much warmer than the dampness of England,” said Mr. and Mrs. Evans in speaking of the climate of New England. While here they have been the guests of Dr. R.T. Wiseman, George Wiseman, Thomas Rivard and Miss Isabella Wiseman. Mrs. Evans was born in Scotland, as was also Miss Isabella Wiseman of Lewiston, but when a small child, Miss Wiseman came to this country to make her home.

Cash awards as high as $500 could provide added incentive for Lewiston city employees to put on their thinking caps if the city decides to resume its Suggestion and Award program. The city’s Personnel Board voted Thursday to recommend the City Council bring back a program that gives monetary awards to employees who come up with ideas to improve the operation of city government. The program was previously in effect from 1980 to 1983 but fell into disuse. Ideas submitted must meet one or more of six criteria, such as improving employee morale and working conditions, eliminating unnecessary or redundant procedures, and bettering communication with the public, according to guidelines of the recommended program.
