MEXICO — Although the Free Store will be closing at the end of the year, it does appear that Santa’s Helpers will continue after this year.
Margaret McNeal, who has carried on her mother’s legacy by running Santa’s Helpers for the past five year, said the final details are still being worked out, but a way is being formulated to allow this beloved community program to live on.
Santa’s Helpers is a group that provides new clothing and toys to deserving children and their parents each Christmas season.
McNeal said the expense of maintaining the present Roxbury Road facility, donated in 2000, was a major factor in her decision to discontinue the two programs.
Since that time, the possible end to Santa’s Helpers, started by Dot Sanchas in the late 1970’s, had been met with sadness by the many people who donate to the program. But the sudden rescue of Santa’s Helpers will mean families and children in need will continue to benefit.
Last year alone, Santa’s Helpers served more than 400 children and a couple hundred families.
McNeal said Santa’s Helpers is still accepting donations as well as accepting applications right up until Christmas eve. Qualified people need to have their MaineCare cards when they apply.
A big need for Santa’s Helpers this year are toys for ages up to 12 years old. “And a lot of moms are asking for boots again this year.
No matter what size for boys or girls, we will use them,”she said.
And whether there are donation in items or in cash, McNeal is now looking forward to beginning the effort to prepare for next year’s Santa’s Helpers.
