BRIDGTON — Loon Echo Land Trust invites all to a snowshoe hike on Pleasant Mountain’s Bald Peak Trail at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28.
Try out those new snowshoes and work off a little Christmas turkey at the same time. Hardy trekkers should meet at the Bald Peak trailhead on Mountain Road at 8:45. Parking alongside Mountain Road is limited; carpooling is encouraged.
This will be a strenuous hike requiring proper winter clothing (no cotton), boots, fluids and food. Conditions may require snowshoes, traction devices, hiking poles and extra provisions. The first mile includes a 1400-foot elevation gain with the round trip totaling three miles, taking approximately five hours.
Time and conditions permitting, hikers will visit the Needles Eye waterfall, the Big Bald Peak and the Red Pine Woodland at the North Peak before descending via Sues Way Trail. In the event of heavy snow or extreme cold, the hike will be canceled. Bring a camera as there will be great photo opportunities.
Loon Echo hikes are free, however donations are always welcome and help the stewardship efforts at the preserves. Find out more about Loon Echo by visiting www.loonecholandtrust.org.
