SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) — Maine officials have signed a contract for office space for the state Department of Health and Human Services and the state Department of Labor in South Portland.
The commissioner of the state Department of Administrative and Financial Services says the 30-year-lease signed Thursday will save Maine taxpayers more than $23.4 million over three decades when compared with rates paid for current offices in Portland.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1f0byh1 ) reported that the lease on a 75,000-square-foot building proposed near the Portland International Jetport requires developer ELC Management Inc. to get all state and local permits by March 15. Construction must start by April 16.
Critics of the move, including Democratic state Sen. Justin Alfond of Portland, says it will make it difficult for many people to access state services.
