KITTERY (AP) — Officials at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard temporarily evacuated some personnel after concerns were raised about an unstable crane being used for some building repairs.
Deputy Public Affairs Officer Gary Hildreth said the report about the crane next to Building 178 came in at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Personnel in the building and in nearby buildings were evacuated.
The contractor crane was secured and is in a safe condition. The crane did not collapse and there was no damage or any injuries.
People have since returned to their workplaces.
Hildreth said in March 2012, Environmental Chemical Corp., of Marlborough, Mass., was awarded a $38 million contract for energy and structural repairs to Building 178. The crane contractor is Rose Steel.
