CANTON — Selectmen voted Thursday night to solicit bids for the former municipal building on Route 140.
A minimum bid of $7,500 is required and all offers must be submitted by Feb. 10. Selectmen will open them Feb. 13.
The approximate 60- by 150-foot concrete building was constructed in 1968 on about a quarter acre of land in the flood plain. It was used for town government operations until last year, Administrative Assistant Scotty Kilbreth said. It’s one story and contains a large hall, office, kitchen and a garage bay.
Kilbreth said the building has been emptied and there is no heat in it or maintenance of it this winter.
Kilbreth said he would get the newspaper ads for bids out next week. Several people have expressed interest in the building, he said.
Residents have been asking selectmen to get rid of unused buildings in town.
Government operations were moved to the Town Office at 9 Staples Hill Road, where selectmen meet. Town meetings are held at the Fire Department next to the town garage off Route 108.
In other business Thursday, selectmen are requesting Dwayne White to pay the full amount of back taxes because he is delinquent on his payment plan.
They also said Cindy Terrill defaulted on terms of the town’s flood plain buyout of her home and will send her a letter.
Selectman Lisa Cummings said the skating rink behind the ball field on Route140 is open.
Carlton Welsh questioned the town’s valuation of Becky McDonald’s land. He said her home occupies one acre and the remaining 7.5 acres are swamp.
Kilbreth said the state’s formula is as fair and equal and he saw no action to take.
He said the Canton Crier town newsletter will be published the first of February.
An executive session was held to review snowplow drivers.
There will be a General Assistance public hearing prior to the selectmen meeting Feb. 11.
