FREEPORT — Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office will work Monday to determine the cause of a morning fire at 3 Ware Road, next door to a mobile home gutted by fire Sunday.

“We don’t know if it’s suspicious,” Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier said at the scene of the fire, just next to the 5 Ware Road home destroyed on Sunday.

Monday’s fire, also in a mobile home, was reported at 6:36 a.m., and firefighters discovered heavy fire in the kitchen area and flames showing out the back porch, according to Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier.

The blaze was under control in about 20 minutes, he said.

The family of four escaped without injury, but two dogs were lost in the fire.

The home, owned by Carolyn Enns-West, was gutted, with damage estimated at $100,000. The American Red Cross was en route Monday morning to assist renters Robert and Nicole Argraves and their two children. Fournier said the family did not have insurance.

Sunday’s fire, at 5 Ware Road, began as a cooking fire after someone left something on the stove, Fournier said.

A man and his adult son, whose names were not available, lived in the home at 5 Ware Road, which was also destroyed. The home is owned by Lester and Diane Scott. Damage to that home was also estimated at $100,000, Fournier said.

Sunday’s fire, reported just after 1:30 p.m., rekindled later in the day, drawing firefighters to the scene for several hours.
