ELLSWORTH — Nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that draw on the strengths of the community and foster collaboration are encouraged to apply to the Western Mountains Fund, part of the Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program.

A volunteer committee of residents and business leaders from Franklin and Somerset counties reviews grants and makes recommendations for funding. The deadline for applying is Feb. 15. Application and guidelines are available at www.mainecf.org.

In 2013, the Western Mountains Committee awarded 11 grants that totaled more than $64,000. They included:

• $9,000 to the Phillips Area Community Center to increase use of the center and help tie the community together through a history walk with signage, maps, and guides;

• $8,400 to the High Peaks Alliance to increase community residents’ capacity to create and implement their own vision for permanent public access in the region; and

• $7,000 to the Franklin County Children’s Task Force for a cyber-bullying prevention project.
