RUMFORD — With the score 23-13 at the half, Mountain Valley surged to a late-game comeback that fell short with a shot from Ashley Russell being called off at the buzzer, as Monmouth edged past the Falcons 36-35 in an MVC girls’ basketball contest.

Paxton Lessard gathered in a tea- high 12 points, all coming from behind the arc, for Monmouth (8-5). Kylie Kemp paced the Mustangs with 10 points.

Sophomore Sydney Petrie tallied 14 points for the Falcons, as they fall to 4-10 on the season with the loss.

Waynflete 52, Buckfield 31

BUCKFIELD — Senior Leigh Fernandez got comfortable behind the arc, scoring 12 of her game-high 13 points from deep, as Waynflete rolled to a 52-31 victory over Buckfield in a girls’ basketball contest on Tuesday.

Helen Gray-Bauer chipped in 10 points on the day for the Flyers who improve to 7-6 on the season. Juliana Harwood paced Waynflete with eight points.

Arrabine Dunn scored a season-high 12 points for the Bucks who fall to 2-11 on the season.

Rangeley 60, Hyde 19

RANGELEY — Tori Letarte poured in 18 points as Rangeley cruised to a 60-19 victory over Hyde in girls’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Blayke Morin paced Rangeley with five assists going along with her 12 points for the Lakers (11-1). Taylor Esty gathered in10 points, while Maddison Egan grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for Rangeley.

Hyde (1-10) was led in scoring by sophomore Diamond Brown, who recorded nine points on the day.

Gardiner 57, Leavitt 53

GARDINER — The Tigers took a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and denied a late comeback to secure the victory, as Gardiner edged past Leavitt 57-53 in a boys’ KVAC basketball contest.

Seth McFarland led all scorers with 14 points for the Tigers, who jump to 8-5 on the season. Bradley Weston netted 11 points as well for Gardiner.

Max Green and Korey Caito led the scoring for the Hornets (3-11) with 12 and 11 points respectively. The 12 points for Green, a sophomore guard, topped a career high.

Hyde 61, Rangeley 35

RANGELEY — Abdul Sanni led all scorers with 16 points, as Hyde cruised to a 61-35 victory over Rangeley in boys’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Wesley Miller and Andrew Palermo netted eight points each to pace the Phoenix (10-1). Rangeley committed 22 first-half turnovers, which gave Hyde a 38-17 halftime edge.

Michael Haley and Timmy White recorded 14 and 12 points respectively for the Lakers (2-11).

Dirigo 51, St. Dom’s 33

AUBURN — Riley Robinson drained 22 points as Dirigo rolled to a 51-33 victory over St. Dom’s in MVC boys’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Dylon Kidder and Clay Swett tallied six points for the Cougars, who improve to 12-1 on the season with the win. The victory was a milestone for Dirigo’s coach Magnusson, who recorded the 100th win of his career.

For St. Dom’s, Mike Bryant netted eight points.

Mens’ Basketball

Bates 79, Husson 58

BANGOR — Junior Graham Safford led five Bobcats in double figures with 17 points as Bates College men’s basketball beat previously undefeated Husson University 79-58 on Tuesday night.

Safford added eight rebounds and seven assists to his point total while senior Luke Matarazzo recorded 14 points and five assists.

After allowing Husson to take its first lead of the second half at 40-39 with just over 13 minutes remaining, Adam Philpott hit a 3-pointer to spark a 14-4 run which gave Bates a 53-44 advantage with 8:31 left.

For Husson, senior Brooks Spaulding paced the team with 14 points.
