LEWISTON — A local man was sentenced in federal court to more than 10 years in federal prison for trying to traffic in oxycodone.

Jermaine Johnson, 40, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland to 130 months in prison plus six years of supervised release for his conviction on a charge of possession with intent to distribute oxycodone. He pleaded guilty to the charge in September.

Police said Johnson was stopped in Sabattus and was found to be in possession of 212 oxycodone pills. Law enforcement agents seized more than $16,000 from his home. He was found to be responsible for distributing nearly 4,000 of the pills last year.

At the sentencing, the judge determined that Johnson was a career offender, which elevated his sentence, according to a written release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Portland.

The case was investigated by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Maine State Police and the Lewiston Police Department.
