LEWISTON — Dozens of police officers scoured the downtown Wednesday after a robbery at the Community Credit Union on Pine Street at about 3 p.m.

It was believed no one was hurt when a man walked into the credit union and demanded money. It was not clear how much, if any, money was taken.

Minutes after the robbery was reported, a dozen officers were on scene, including several detectives and at least one agent from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. Also at the scene was Lewiston police Cpl. Kevin Cramp, who was following his tracking dog, Chico, around the business.

Police searched up and down Howe Street in the area where the suspect was last seen. Several people stood on sidewalks watching the action, although most said they had no idea what had happened.

“I was just walking on Pine Street when all these cops started showing up,” one woman said. “I don’t like that this happened so close to my house.”

The suspect was described as white, about 6 feet tall with a crew cut. By late Wednesday night, no arrest had been made. Police were working with footage from credit union security cameras as their investigation continued.
