Open house at Fiddlehead School

GRAY — Open houses will be held for fall 2014 admissions at Fiddlehead School of Arts & Science, 25 Shaker Road.

The school is a free public charter school.

Open houses are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Feb. 3, 10 and 24, and at 6 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12 and 26.

The school is accepting letters of intent for pre-K through grade 3.

Fiddlehead School of Arts & Science was approved Feb. 5, 2013, by the Maine Charter School Commission to become one of Maine’s first public charter schools.

Lyme support; forgiveness lecture

LEWISTON — The Ark, 791 Lisbon Road, has announced the following programs.

Franco-American women’s stories

AUBURN — How have the Franco-American, French heritage, women contributed to the story of our communities? Where are the women’s stories kept and told? Who are the women of the stories?

From 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Auburn Public Library, Rhea Côté Robbins will discuss the life stories of Franco-American women, and explore how their lives became embedded with the fabric of their communities.

Côté Robbins is an author of creative nonfiction who explores her identity via her culture. She also is the founder and director of the Franco-American Women’s Institute, currently celebrating its 18th year of existence.

Her presentation will focus on her writing process and helping other contemporary women explore and publish their works via the FAWI website. She will read from her new book, “Down the Plains,” and will address the advantages of possessing self-knowledge about one’s own culture.

VFW plans spaghetti supper

AUBURN — A spaghetti supper will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at VFW Post 1603, 588 Minot Ave.

Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for kids under 12. Menu includes coffee and dessert.

CMHVI bake sale, blood pressure screenings

LEWISTON — The Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute will sponsor a bake sale and free blood pressure screenings as part of its observation of American Heart Month in February.

The bake sale will be held on Go Red for Women Day, Friday, Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Central Maine Medical Center 60 High Street Main Lobby. Proceeds will benefit the Central Maine Heart Walk.

A special blood pressure screening will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at the Central Maine Heart Associates offices on the ground floor of the 60 High Street building. Anyone wanting to participate in the blood pressure screening should inquire at the CMHA reception desk.

The CMMC Health and Fitness Center offers free blood pressure screenings every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.
