AUGUSTA (AP) — The food bank in Augusta, Maine is hungry for donations.

The Augusta Food Bank says its donations are dwindling while people in need of its services are at an all-time high.

The Kennebec Journal reports that the food bank operated at a net loss of $2,000 in January. Its annual fundraising campaign pulled in only $7,500 — in contrast to the $20,000 it drew 10 years ago.

In 2013 the food bank fed about 10,000 people — the most since it opened in 1981. Almost a third of those fed were children.

Officials at other central Maine food banks report the need for their services is up, but say they haven’t seen the same drop in donations that Augusta has.
