BETHEL — The Western Mountains Senior College program titled To Your Health will present a talk on cholesterol from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the West Parish Congregational Church.
“Fat Facts About Your Blood Chemistry — and What You Can Do About It,” will be led by Dr. Daniel E. Van Buren, director of Cardiovascular Medicine of the New England Heart Institute at Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, N.H.
“He’ll be defining exactly what cholesterol is, and will define things like HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and other things related to cholesterol,” Rosabelle Tifft, chairman of To Your Health, said Wednesday. “We also had some people asking about the connection between cholesterol and dementia, so Mr. Van Buren will be speaking to that claim as well.”
Tifft said this will be the third presentation Van Buren has given in Bethel for the To Your Health program.
“He’s very knowledgeable and is always good about coming down and answering people’s questions,” she said. “He usually stays after the program because the residents have so many questions for him.”
To Your Health has presentations scheduled for March and April also.
“On March 6, Cathy DiCocoa will be visiting us to speak about nutrition, and in April, we’ll be inviting Cathy Heffernan of MaineGeneral Health to speak to us about urinary and gynecological issues,” Tifft said.
Tifft said she is hoping to host a presentation on Alzheimer’s disease.
“It seems like one thing that’s been popping up on the evaluations we hand out after every presentation is that people are more and more interested in Alzheimer’s,” she said. “Several years ago, we had an extensive unit on Alzheimer’s, but it’s been a little while. I think it’s time to have another one.”
