GORHAM — Farhiyo Aden looked at her seeding in the two-mile and didn’t like it.

The Lewiston junior was ranked 13th in her sectional in the two-mile Monday in the Class A state championship meet.

“I wanted to do better than that,” Aden said.

“Better” was an understatement.

Aden finished the race in 11:41.80, finished third overall, and set a new school record.

“She ran a perfectly-paced race,” Lewiston coach T.J. Niles said. “She got third in the state and I was looking at the B results and it looks like she’s fifth in the whole state and should qualify for New Englands.”

Aden’s achievement was just one of three new school records Lewiston set Monday. Faith Shaw set one in the 800, while the 4×800 relay team of Shaw, Taylor True, Aden and Mana Abdi also bested the school mark.

“The girls’ broke the 4×800 mark by almost half a second,” Niles said.

The Lewiston girls’ team finished 15th overall with 10 points while the boys’ team finished 13th with 11.

“It was a mixed bag today,” Niles said. “Some kids worked really hard and some kids gave up.”

The Edward Little boys finished fourth overall with 31 points while the girls’ team finished 17th with six points.

“Coming in we weren’t looking to do things team-wise,” EL boys’ coach Dan Pontriand said. “We were looking to do things as individuals and hope to get some kids to New Englands.”

Scarborough won the boys’ meet with 91.33 points while Cheverus and South Portland tied for second with 62 each. Brewer rounded out the top five with 27.5.

In the girls’ meet, Thornton Academy won with 53 followed by Cheverus with 44. Bangor was third with 40, edging out Bonny Eagle with 39.5. Brunswick was a close fifth with 39.

Aden’s seed time was 12:16.84, landing her last in the second sectional. It wasn’t an ideal ranking, but one that motivated her.

“I knew I could do better that that,” Aden said. “That was my reaction in my head, and I proved it right.”

Kiera Murray of Cheverus won the race in 11:20.18, followed by Bonny Eagle’s Mary Szatkowski in 11:35.29.

In the 800, Shaw broke her own school mark with a seventh-place finish. She ran the race in 2:28.48, eclipsing a mark she set as a sophomore. Kialeigh Marston of Bonny Eagle won the race in 2:22.12, followed by Brunswick’s Tiffany Tanner in 2:23.50.

“She had to come from behind,” Niles said. “She had a negative split the whole way but still broke the school record. If she could just have gotten into the middle instead of getting in the back, she could have run a 2:26.0.”

The 4×800 relay team had set a new school mark at the KVAC meet and rode that success Monday. The team finished ninth in 10:28.56.

“We were all just pushing as hard as we could,” Abdi said. “We knew we could do it.”

Lewiston also got a sixth-place finish from Heather Kendall in the 200. She finished in 27.53. The 4×200 relay team finished seventh in 1:53.60, featuring Kendall, Jenny Martin, Adela Kalilwa and Olivia Norton.

The Lewiston boys had Osman Doorow place in a pair of events. He was third in the mile and sixth in the two mile.

The sophomore ran the mile in 4:46.69. Bangor’s Jon Stanhope won the event in 4:33.30 followed by Hampden’s Caleb Lord in 4:34.76.

“That puts him sixth in the state overall, I believe,” Niles said. “So he should go to the New Englands in the mile.”

He finished the two-mile in 10:13.98.

The Blue Devils also got a sixth from Daud Idow in the 400. He ran it in 53.93. Abdifatah Mohamed was seventh in the long jump with a distance of 19:05.75.

“I was expecting to do better,” Niles said. “I was hoping for more PRs. It was a mixed bag. It was like a 50-50 meet. We had kids that did well in one thing but not in another.”

EL girls Katie Ferrara, Anna Beaudet, Morgan Knowlton and Kailey Norcross finished fifth in the 4×200 in 1:52.34. The Red Eddies also got a pair of placements in the triple jump. Beaudet jumped 33-07 for sixth and Makayla Norcross was seventh with a leap of 33-06.50.

On the boys’ side, Hunter Martin placed in two events. He was third in the 55 meter dash in 6.84 and third in the 200 with a time of 23.65. Trey Rogers was second in the 55 meter dash. Biddeford’s James Ociti was first in 6.75 followed by Rogers in 6.80.

The EL boys’ 4×200 relay team of Brandon Binette, Tyler Blanchard, Rogers and Martin finished second in 1:36.22. Binette added a seventh-place finish in the pole vault with height of 12-0. Brad Morissette was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-03.25.

“We were hoping to get Brad in the long jump but that didn’t quite work out,” said Pontbriand. “He was close in the triple jump but they don’t let the triple jump in New Englands.”

Mt. Blue’s Aaron Willingham finished fifth in the mile. The junior ran a time of 4:47.28.
