Growing cut flowers is lecture topic
PARIS — Cindy Creps will discuss “Growing Cut Flowers in Your Own Garden” for the McLaughlin Garden 2014 lecture series. This presentation will be held on Wednesday, March 5, at the garden’s newest acquisition, 103 Main St., right next door to the historic Tribou home where Bernard McLaughlin lived. The talk will begin promptly at 4 p.m. The public is invited to come early for tea.
Creps has grown flowers for 12 years at Meadow Ridge Perennial Farm, 316 Back St., Hebron. She participates in both the Norway and South Paris Farmers’ markets. She began gardening as a young child in Orrington, working with her grandfather who grew flowers and her parents who grew vegetables. Even though she helped her parents, her true love followed in her grandfather’s passion. For her talk she will discuss her favorite annual and perennial flowers, ones that she uses in creating bouquets of cut flowers.
The lecture is open to the public. No prior reservations are needed. Donations will be accepted to further the upkeep of the historic garden and buildings.
Lectures will be held weekly on Wednesday afternoons through April 2. The complete schedule is available at www.mclaughlingarden.org.
Legion offers youth dance on March 7
OXFORD — A youth dance for grades 4-8 will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Oxford American Legion Post 112, 160 King St.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $6.

AARP chapter meets March 10
PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet on Monday, March 10, at the First Congregational Church on East Main Street. Lunch will be served at noon and will feature turkey pie.
The cost is $6.50 and reservations are required by calling Ruth at 744-9069 by Friday, March 7.
The business meeting will begin at 1 p.m. For those who have not already paid them, chapter dues are due.
The program will be presented by Norma Salway and Dotti Adams, sisters who will discuss the history, uses and styles of aprons in American history. Members are asked to wear aprons to the meeting. The meeting will end with a book/puzzle swap.
Fire Department Auxiliary supper
PARIS — The Paris Fire Department Auxiliary will hold a public supper featuring corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, veggies, mac and cheese, salad and rolls at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Paris Fire Department, Western Avenue.
Cost for adults is $8; ages 4-12, $4; under 3 free. All proceeds benefit Paris Fire Department Auxiliary and Fire Personnel.
Square Dance Club plans March 8 dance
PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club will hold a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Oxford Hills Middle School cafeteria, 100 Pine St.
After a long winter of dance cancellations it is time to celebrate spring. Walt Bull will be the caller of mainstream and plus level dances and Carol Stewart Arsenault will cue the round dancing.
Refreshments will be served at intermission. Door prizes and 50/50 drawing will take place during this period.
Admission is $6 per person. Non-dancers are invited to watch at no charge.

Retired FBI agent is guest speaker
BRYANT POND — Jack Richardson of Paris, a retired special agent with the FBI, will be the guest speaker at the Whitman Memorial Library in Bryant Pond at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 13. Richardson will talk about his time with the FBI and will also speak of some current programs.
The program is open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.
If there is no school in SAD 44, the program will be postponed until April 10.
Duplicate bridge club results
OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate bridge club met Feb. 28. A five-table Howell movement was enjoyed.
Finishing first in flight A were Dottie Kelleher (Westbrook) and Mike True (Auburn), second were Rosemarie Goodwin (Lewiston) and Luke Merry (Gray), third were Hazel Glazier (Norway) and Marta Clements (Woodstock), fourth were Neenie Kivus (Lewiston) and Dick Allen (New Gloucester).
Finishing first in flight B were Hank Sakrison (Poland) and Denny Raymond (Waterford), second were Jim Krainin (Naples) and Milt McKeen (Bridgton), third were Cindy and Bob Kirchherr (South Paris), fourth were Carol Curran (Waterford) and Cathy Sanderson (Waterford).
