Program: Unsung, local women

NORWAY — In observation of International Women’s Day a public interest forum, “Accomplished, Unsung, Local Women in Our Past,” will be presented by Peter Lenz at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Fare Share Commons, 443 Main St.

Socialist women in the United States and Europe established International Women’s Day almost 100 years ago. It is now celebrated worldwide, and March has become Women’s History Month.

Lenz knows about women whose stories may have been discarded and neglected and who did what they did close to home. His research suggests that their contributions to equality and dignity for women — and for men too — are easier to trace because they are close at hand.

He will tell the story of a woman who founded a world-famous Emersonian philosophical movement, and stories of others like an Abenaki healer, an abolitionist agitator, a snowshoe racer/poet and founder of the Girls Camp Movement, and a socialist author and poet from Sweden, Maine.

Discussion will follow.

For more information, call Tom Whitney at 743-2183.
