FARMINGTON — The Mt. Blue High School Jazz Band directed by Karen Beacham and the Mt. Blue High School Chamber Singers directed by Carol Shumway participated in the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival in Boston on Saturday.
The band was awarded a superior gold rating and Outstanding Band and Adjudicator awards.
The Outstanding Band Award goes to the group with the highest overall score regardless of group type or classification. The Adjudicator Award is given based on the adjudicator rating or by personal recommendation by the adjudication team.
Four band members were also recognized for their performance. Receiving the Maestro Award, for individuals who display excellence in their craft, were Eli Cohen, Luke Wooden, Zack Cummings and Silas Rogers.
The singers also received a superior gold rating and were invited to participate in the Elite Performance Series Festival at Carnegie Hall. The festival gives the most elite choirs, bands and orchestras the opportunity to perform on the Ronald O. Perelman Stage in the Isaac Stern Auditorium, the largest performance venue at Carnegie Hall. They also learn under from internationally acclaimed adjudicators and conductors. Festival participation is by invitation or audition only.
The final award at the Heritage Festival was the Spirit of Boston Award given to Mt. Blue High School teachers, chaperons and students.
The award goes to the school or group that best represents their school, community, state or province. It’s based on actions and attitudes as school participants interact with each other, the staff and adjudicators throughout the weekend.
