PORTLAND — The Maine Medical Center Research Institute wants to find out if Vitamin D can prevent Type 2 diabetes.
The Scarborough institute needs 600 to 700 people who are possibly at risk of becoming diabetic. The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1jQJQ8O ) reported about 150 will be selected to participate. Half will be given a Vitamin D pill and the other half will receive a placebo.
Hospital officials said the human clinical trial will be the largest in Maine history.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Maine’s percentage of residents with diabetes has doubled since the mid-1990s. A 2011 report by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said about 90,000 of Maine’s 1.3 million residents are diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
