100 years ago, 1914
A man who conducts a grocery business on Court Street, Auburn was fined $5 for over-working and over-driving his horse, by Judge Webber in the Auburn municipal court, Thursday afternoon. Complaint was made by Agent Geo. A. Allen of the S. P. C. A. Several witnesses appeared.
50 years ago, 1964
George L. Humphrey of Poland Spring was honored as Maine’s 1964 outstanding young farmer during the poultry program at Farm and Home Week at the University of Maine. Humphrey was cited for starting a poultry operation in 1949 with 50 chicks and investing whatever money he saved from his truck driver’s wages into the business. Today the Humphrey farm has 19,400 birds, with each laying an average of 240 eggs per year. As the state winner, Humphrey received an all expense paid trip to Madison, Wisc., for the national outstanding young farmer finals from April 12-14.

(PHOTO CAPTION) Jim Fawcett, life science teacher at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, displays his blue ribbon won for a black duck working decoy which he entered at the Maine sportsman’s show in Augusta this past weekend. Fawcett has taken blue ribbons in the open class over the past five years. He is a charter member of the Maine Wildlife Wood Carvers Association and resides in Poland Spring.
