Iris Society to hold meeting

AUBURN — The Maine Iris Society’s April 8 meeting will feature Mark Brandhorst from Halls Pond Gardens in South Paris talking about “Gardening on Rocks.”

In taking advantage of rock outcroppings and stonewalls, he uses hardy succulents and other drought-tolerant plants and finds that the possibilities are endless with the many colors and forms that are available. Brandhorst, an artist as well as a gardener, will show slides from nature as well as from his gardens and nursery where he sells sempervivum (hens and chicks), sedums and other low rock hugging plants.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave. The public is welcome. Members will have a business meeting following the presentation.

Library program on Canadian artists

AUBURN — “Seven Canadian Artists” will be the program at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.

The library will hold a series of Primetime Adventures featuring travels to exotic places, little-known historical moments and awe-inspiring art work. This collaborative series of programs with Senior College kicks off with Michael Everett discussing an art movement that began in our neighbor to the north.

The story of Canada’s Group of Seven provides an excellent starting point for art appreciation. The group was a regional Toronto art movement of the early 20th century that created a Canadian national style of landscape painting, a style that continues to influence how Canadians and the world imagine their country.

MEREDA plans breakfast event

AUBURN — MEREDA’s Morning Menu Breakfast Event will be held Tuesday, April 15, at Martindale Country Club, 527 Beech Hill Road.

A buffet breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8 a.m., with a program from 8 to 9 a.m. The Maine Real Estate & Development Association will host a second “Real Estate Development 101” seminar where a developer, a banker and an architect walk through the typical process of a development timetable.

Breastfeeding support group meets

AUBURN — The La Leche League offers breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant women, new mothers and growing families. Services offered include monthly meetings and 24-hour telephone help.

All interested women are invited to attend the next meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are always welcome. 

All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion in addition to the scheduled topic, “Breastfeeding, the Mother-Baby Relationship, and the Weaning Process.” The discussion will include nutrition for nursing mothers, introducing solids to baby and the weaning breastfed baby.

WLU program, ‘Surviving the Blitz’

AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County will host speaker Rose Goodwin who will discuss “Surviving the Blitz” at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10.

Goodwin was born and raised in London where she attended business school for two years until the school was bombed. She worked as a private secretary to the managing director of The Grocers Gazette until she came to the U.S. as the war bride of an American in the U.S. Air Force.

Goodwin’s presentation will take place at the historic Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St. The public is welcome, and members are encouraged to bring guests. Admission to the clubhouse is free but donations are accepted.

This month a charitable collection of clothing, toiletries, wipes, etc., for Safe Voices will be gathered.

Civil War Round Table Lecture

BRUNSWICK — Joshua L. Chamberlain Civil War Round Table Lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Curtis Memorial Library, Morrell Room, 23 Pleasant St.

The speaker will be Wayne Motts, “Fighting the Civil War: National Civil War Museum.” Lectures are free and open to the public.

Lewiston Legacy Writers Group

LEWISTON — The Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter will present its free Lewiston Legacy Writers Group from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, April 11, at SeniorsPlus, 8 Falcon Road.

The group helps those with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias to write their life story for loved ones or just themselves. You don’t have to be a writer to benefit from this completely confidential and fun program – if you’ve written a grocery list during your life, you’re eligible.

Lakeside OES to install

WALES — On Friday, April 11, Lakeside Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star will be installed at 7 p.m. for the 115th year. It will be held at the Grange/Masonic Hall, 322 Centre Road.

The installing suite will be led by Stephanie J. Dupal, GCCM and a PGM of Maine. She will be assisted in the East by John L. Cousins, GGCCM, and a PGP of Maine, as installing patron. Nancy Randall Clark, P.M., will be installing chaplain. Josephine V. Dupal, P.M. will be installing marshal, and the music will be provided by Debra Greim, installing organist.

The officers of 2014-15 will be in white gowns and tuxes or dark suits. The officers are reminded to bring finger food to share with guests. This is an open installation and friends and family are invited to attend.

Knights plan bean, chop suey supper

AUBURN — The Andy Valley Knights of Columbus, Council 8742, will hold a bean and American chop suey supper from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in the basement of Sacred Heart Church, Western Avenue.

LEWISTON — In recognition of the canonization of Pope John Paul II, “Sunday Afternoon at the Movies” on April 13 will feature “Pope John Paul II,” starring Jon Voight’s powerful, Emmy-nominated performance as the journey continues from Poland to Rome when he is elected Pope as he defends the dignity of mankind.

Bob Marley coming to Leavitt

TURNER —  LAHS Project Grad 2014 has announced a benefit performance by comedian Bob Marley. The show will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in the auditorium of Leavitt Area High School. Open seating will begin at 6 p.m.
