Fire in Pownal which burned three dwellings and threatened more, Monday afternoon, brought out all the townspeople and gave the men a hard fight. The fire started around the chimney in the home of William Daley and under the influence of the high wind spread rapidly. The Daley house and barn were quickly consumed and little contents were saved. From there the flames spread to the house of George Crummett, where nearly all the furniture was destroyed. Then the home of Clarence Worthing fell before the spreading flames, and only about half the contents of the house were saved, thru heroic work by the family and neighbors. The fire was checked by tearing down the Crummett stable and the blacksmith shop of Mr. Worthing was saved by persistent work by the fire fighters.

Lewiston-Auburn breathed easier today following the successful negotiation last evening of strike-averting work contracts for Bates and Pepperell Mfg. Co. employees. The work of some 2,300 local Textile Workers Union of America employees went on uninterrupted after the negotiations were completed in Boston last night. Rabbi David Berent of Lewiston, State Mediator in the Bates, Pepperell-Textile Workers Union negotiations commended both sides in the battle for their “community responsibility.” Rabbi Berent, who served with the Federal conclilators in the negotiations at Lewiston, Biddeford and in Boston, said, “If it were not for a deep sense of responsibility on the part of the union and the companies toward the community, there would not have been a settlement of the recent dispute.”

A Superior Court judge in Portland on Friday upheld a decision by the Maine Harness Racing Commission to let Lewiston Raceway operate for three popular weeks in May, much to the chagrin of Scarborough Downs officials. Justice Kermit V. Lipez ruled that lawyers for Scarborough Downs had failed to present evidence that the racing commission had been biased or prejudiced in deciding last December to award Lewiston Raceway the highly contested dates of May 7-27.
