PORTLAND, Maine — Two men from Massachusetts were arrested Thursday in Portland after Maine Marine Patrol investigators found them with about 20 pounds of elvers and no license allowing them to possess them.
Joshua P. Medeiros, 30, of South Dartmouth, Mass., and Andrew P. Cournoyer, 43, of West Wareham, Mass., both were charged with possession of elvers without a license, a Class D crime punishable by a fine of up to $2,000, and taken to Cumberland County Jail, Sgt. Rob Beal of the Maine Marine Patrol said Thursday night.
Although Beal said he could release few details as the case remains under investigation, he did say that he and Officer Scott Couture, also of the marine patrol, found the two men with the elvers in Portland and that they apparently planned to sell them.
Elvers are currently selling for $400 to $600 a pound, well below the $2,000 they were fetching a year ago, Beal said. Beal said the baby eels were seized and the vehicle the men were in was impounded.
