WINTHROP — Kennebec Land Trust has planned the following upcoming programs.
Managing Woodlands for Wildlife at Vassalboro Wildlife Habitat, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 26: When habitat is changed through timber harvesting, hurricanes, controlled fires, haying or simply allowing forests to mature into late successional stands, some species of wildlife respond positively while others respond negatively. Gain insights on how habitat can be manipulated to benefit a suite of species. Ron Joseph will be the trip leader. Preregister by calling 377-2848 or emailing glamarche@tklt.org.
Managing Upland Invasive Plants in Your Woodland, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 2: This free public workshop is for landowners, foresters, land managers, pesticide applicators and others interested in learning how to identify, manage and control common invasive plants in woodlands. The workshop consists of a classroom session in the morning and an afternoon field program.
Presenters include Kristin Puryear, Maine Natural Areas Program; Gary Fish, Maine Pesticides Control Board; Nancy Sferra, The Nature Conservancy; Ronald Lemin, Crop Production Services – Timberland Division. A field session will be held on Kennebec Land Trust’s Little Cobbossee Oatway Preserve nearby. Bring a lunch. Field session is rain or shine, dress accordingly.
Maine Licensed Forester and Pesticide Applicator CEUs are available.

Nature Writing: Why Writing Is Like Fishing, Peter Miller Woodland, Vienna, 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 4, with Bob Kimber, Maine author. We’ll begin this workshop with a brief discussion of the similarities between fishing and writing, followed by a walk in search of topics for a short essay that each participant will begin writing. We’ll finish by reading aloud and discussing as many of the essay starts as we have time for. Bring a pad, pencil and clipboard. Macdonald Woods Bird Walk, Readfield, 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 9: With birding expert Jeff Wells, join fellow birders for a spring hike. This will be close to peak migration, with many of the early birds beginning to set up territories and the later birds still passing through.
