BIDDEFORD — Derrick Roy of Lewiston, a senior from Connecticut College, is conducting research in the lab of Bruce Branchini.

Roy recently participated in the sixth annual Northeast Undergraduate Research Development Symposium. This National Science Foundation-supported conference provides a forum where undergraduate researchers share their research findings.

NURDS 2014 was held on March 8-9 at the University of New England’s Biddeford campus.

Roy presented a research project titled, “Synthesis of the Novel Firefly Luciferase Inhibitor Benzothiophene Dehydroluciferin Sulfamoyl Adenosine.”

He is expected to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology.

WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Shonah E. Russell of Sabattus has been named to the dean’s list at Waynesburg University for the fall term 2013.

Russell, a junior, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in human services education.

She is a graduate of Vineyard Christian School.

BANGOR — Kyle Hargreaves of Raymond was named to the dean’s list at Husson University during the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters. He was subsequently named to the honors list during the spring 2013 semester.

Kyle is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science, kinesiology/doctor of physical therapy program and is currently a junior (third year). He is the grandson of Richard and Glenda Hargreaves of New Vineyard.

WATERVILLE — Tracy Jewell of New Sharon was named to the dean’s list at Thomas College’s Continuing Education Division for the spring 2014 semester. Jewell is majoring in accounting.

MILTON, Mass. — Curry College has announced that Sophia Geelhoed of Poland was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

The Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society was formed in 1953 when a group of nurses attending Boston University set out to establish an organization that would represent the best of what nursing offered in this part of the world. The Curry College chapter was formed soon after, chartered at the time as only the seventh chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. Members of the Honor Society are routinely sent to leadership conferences, academic events and member forums.

EASTON, Mass. — Emily Dumont of Auburn and Rebecca-Marie Lessard of Lewiston were inducted into Stonehill College’s Lambda Epsilon Sigma Honor Society.

The purpose of the society is to recognize and promote scholarship. Juniors and seniors who have attained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average are invited to apply for consideration.

Acceptance is based on evidence of academic achievement, of a pursuit of learning that extends beyond the classroom environment and of an ability to communicate effectively through writing. Additionally, in order to be inducted into the society, the student must be recommended by faculty both from the student’s major and from outside of the student’s major.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Brian Hand of Farmington serves as a group study leader in the Academic Resource Center at Bob Jones University for Chemistry for Engineers.

The Academic Resource Center at BJU helps students build academic confidence and excel in college. The study group leaders use their skills to minister to other students who may be struggling or just need additional help in specific subjects. Study group leaders are student volunteers.

KEENE, N.H. — Keene State College’s 14th annual Academic Excellence Conference took place on April 5. This student professional conference is designed to showcase the academic work of Keene State students and the collaborative work between students and faculty. It allows students to share excellent work with a broad audience, and prepares them for submitting proposals to professional conferences.

Among the participants was Eliza Smiley of New Sharon, who presented “Reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Student Documentary on the Center for Peacebuilding.” Smiley is in the Morris-August Honors Program.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Meghan Surette, a resident of Readfield and a member of Assumption College’s Class of 2014, was presented with the departmental award for French as part of the college’s 30th annual Undergraduate Symposium.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Kathe Washburn of Harrison was named to the dean’s list for fall 2013 at Biola University.

Biola’s grade point average requirement for the dean’s list is one of the highest among Southern California Christian universities.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Stevenson University has recognized Arik Fenstermacher of Peru for his hard work and dedication as a member of the 2014 baseball team.

The team is led by coach Jason Tawney, who has entered his 12th season as the head baseball coach at Stevenson. During his tenure, the Mustangs have totaled two North Eastern Athletic Conference regular season championships, three second-place finishes in the NEAC tournament, two in the Capital Athletic Conference and one in the Commonwealth Conference last season.
