PORTLAND — A well-known Maine attorney and sports agent has pleaded guilty to money laundering.
Gary Prolman pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to a federal money laundering charge for handling at least $100,000 in cash from a former client. The Internal Revenue Service contends the money from drug proceeds was deposited in small amounts to avoid federal scrutiny.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Prolman waived indictment to plead guilty. Under the plea deal, he has no right to appeal if he is sentenced to 46 months in prison or less. His lawyer said that Prolman was cooperating with investigators and was remorseful.
Prolman once represented promising young hockey stars like Brian Dumoulin of the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise and Matt Mangene, a prospect for the Philadelphia Flyers.
