AUBURN — Jacqueline Smith placed a hit right up the middle to score the runner from third as St. Dom’s edges past Mt. Abram 4-3 in dramatic fashion in a softball game Friday.
St. Dom’s picks up its first win of the season with a strong defensive effort headed by Kym Johnson who snagged two running catches. Freshman Allie Veinote held Mt. Abram to three runs throughout the game, while her counterpart Katie Jordan kept the saints at bay with 11 strikeouts.
St. Dom’s improves to 1-5 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 2-5.
Winthrop 8, Dirigo 2
DIXFIELD — A pair of home runs by senior Abby Helm propelled Winthrop to an 8-2 victory over Dirigo in MVC softball match up.
Cat and Lily Ouellette each smacked home runs on the day for the Ramblers, who jump to 4-1 on the season with the win. Strong heads up base running by Randi Dennett opened the field up for Winthrop. Kristen Doughty kept control on the defensive side, hurling 10 strikeouts and shutting down the Dirigo attack.
For Dirigo (2-3), sophomore Lauren Henderson belted a home run and pitcher Katelyn Olsen struck out eight.
Mt. Blue 13, Lewiston 10
LEWISTON — Maranda Currier led a strong offensive attack with four hits as Mt. Blue held off Lewiston to earn the win 13-10 in softball action.
Caitlin Kane chipped in three hits on the afternoon, while Addie Brinkman scattered a pair for the Cougars (4-3). Hailey Farrington recorded the win in the pitching duel, allowing just seven hits.
Lewiston (0-7), finished the top of the seventh inning on a strong note, striking out the batter and throwing down a runner. But the Blue Devils’ bats were held at bay in the bottom of the inning.
Madison 22, Lisbon 3
LISBON FALLS — Madison utilized four hitters that scattered three hits apiece and controlled the pace of the game as Madison routed Lisbon 22-3 in an MVC softball match up Friday.
Aly LeBlanc belted a triple and batted in four runs for the Bulldogs, who remain undefeated on the season at 7-0. Pitcher Emily McKenney hurled six strikeouts in five innings and made quick work of the Lisbon offense. McKenney chipped in on the offensive side as well, batting in three runs and stroking a pair of doubles.
Arianna Kahler sliced two RBI single’s for Lisbon on the day. Alyssa Hall took the loss pitching for the Greyhounds (1-4).
Monmouth 9, Spruce Mountain 7
LIVERMORE FALLS — Despite an early deficit, Monmouth found a way to rally in the last four innings of play, and the Mustangs came away with a 9-7 victory over Spruce Mountain in girls’ MVC softball action.
Spruce Mountain. shot off to an early 4-0 lead due to timely hitting in the first inning. Monmouth’s Corrie Meehan began the rally with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Monmouth (4-2) added another three runs in the seventh with an RBI single from Meehan and a sacrifice fly from Caroline Bonenfant. Kaylee LeClerc led the hitting affair with a pair of doubles for the Phoenix, who fall to 4-3 on the year.
Telstar 26, Boothbay 0
BOOTHBAY — Senior Jessica Dirago kept all Boothbay hitters at bay, striking out 13 and allowing just one hit, as Telstar routed Boothbay 26-0 in a one-sided MVC softball contest.
Numerous walks led to runs with just 10 hits on the day for the Rebels (5-1). Dirago controlled one side of the ball, which put a lot of pressure on the Boothbay defense to perform. Rebecca Howard, Autum Morin and Sadie Ellsworth scattered a pair of hits each for Telstar.
Freshman Cagney O’Brien took the loss pitching for the Seahawks (0-6).
Leavitt 7, MCI 5
TURNER — Senior center fielder Emily Perkins cleared the bases with a triple in the third inning to lead Leavitt to a 7-5 victory over MCI in KVAC softball action Friday.
The Hornets (4-3) responded to three Husky runs in the top of the third inning with four of their own in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-4 lead. Each team traded a run in the fifth inning for the difference in the game.
Center fielder Halle Stewart recorded a pair of hits, including a double, for MCI.
Baseball
Monmouth 15, Spruce Mountain 4
LIVERMORE FALLS — Hunter Richardson jacked a two-run homer to get the offense rolling as Monmouth cruised to a 15-4 victory over Spruce Mountain. in MVC baseball action.
Six defensive errors in the first two frames led to a 7-0 lead early for the Mustangs, who remain undefeated on the season at 6-0. Monmouth added eight more runs in a big fourth, that wrapped the game up in five frames. Brandon Goff led all hitters with three hits and two doubles.
Bradley Hodges had a double for the Phoenix (3-4), while Scottie Hall took the loss on the mound.
Lisbon 6, Madison 5
LISBON FALLS — A classic MVC match up didn’t get going until the final frame of play where Lisbon edged past Madison 6-5 in walk-off fashion.
Lisbon led 2-0 for most the way until Madison answered with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Tyler Halls hurled six innings pitching for the Greyhounds (4-2), striking out seven and giving up five runs. Ryley Austin closed things out in the final inning of play for Lisbon.
Brett Gravel’s RBI single to tie the game was capitalized on a pass ball where Gravel would make it to home and secure the victory. For Madison (2-5), Derek Leblanc had a double and an RBI.
MCI 4, Leavitt 3
TURNER — A couple Leavitt miscues led to a late rally by MCI as it edged past Leavitt 4-3 in a baseball contest Friday.
Paul Dionne belted three hits on the day for MCI, and Emery Moriarty smoked a double. Parker Morrison was credited with the win on the mound, allowing just six hits through seven played.
Chad Morin for Leavitt (3-4) went 2-for-3 from the plate, including a double.
Girls’ lacrosse
Lewiston 10, Oxford Hills 3
PARIS — Jess Cote scored five goals and Kristina Blais added another two as Lewiston dismissed Oxford Hills with a 10-3 victory in a girls’ lacrosse game Friday.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first half and added another four goals in the second half. Mikaela St. Laurent, Sierra Thistlewaite and Laurianne Murphy rounded out the scoring for Lewiston.
For Oxford Hills, Sydney Jackson, Ally Hanley and Katie Bowie each scored three goals.
College baseball
Wesleyan 4, Bates 3
BABSON PARK, Mass. — Bates College baseball rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the seventh, but Wesleyan University tied the game in the eighth and walked off with a 4-3 win on a suicide squeeze on day one of the NESCAC Championship on Friday afternoon.
Playing at Babson College’s Govoni Field — the designated second field on the tournament’s first day — the Bobcats (19-20), the NESCAC East Division’s No. 2 seed, almost knocked off the Cardinals (25-10), the NESCAC West Division’s No. 1 seed.
The Bobcats, playing in their first NESCAC Championship since the tournament began in 2001, will meet Amherst tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in an elimination game at Bentley University’s DeFelice Field in Waltham, Mass. Wesleyan will square off with tournament-host Tufts at the Jumbos’ Huskins Field tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Tufts beat Amherst 9-5 in the championship’s other first round game.
Wesleyan scored the game-winning run as Will O’Sullivan dropped down a bunt with the bases loaded to score Donnie Cimino from third. Bobcat sophomore reliever Rob DiFranco nearly made a bare-handed toss to home to get the out. The Cardinals loaded the bases as two runners were hit by pitches and another walked.
Bates senior left-handed starter Brad Reynolds threw 110 pitches over 7.1 innings striking out three and allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits. Junior Sam Maliska took the loss (1-1) giving up one run in one inning.
Wesleyan’s Sam Elias earned the win (2-2) not allowing a run on two hits over 2.2 innings of relief. Left-handed starter Nick Cooney hurled six innings, conceding three runs, one earned, on one hit with seven strikeouts.
Trailing 2-0, the Bobcats changed the complexion of the game with three runs in the top of the seventh to gain a 3-2 lead. Senior Steve Burke and junior Nate Pajka led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Attempting to bunt, sophomore Conor Reenstierna fouled off his first two attempts but succeed on his third try.
Cooney fielded the bunt cleanly but misfired on his throw to third allowing both Burke and Davis to round the bases and knot the score at 2-2.
First-year Brendan Fox then singled into left field to plate Reenstierna and put Bates up 3-2.
